This research project investigates local air quality patterns around Irvine, with a focus on how Orange County Transportation Authority bus frequency influence PM2.5 (Particulate Matter 2.5) levels throughout the day. Our team collected PM2.5 readings utilizing a Temptop P6000 Air Quality Monitor at school campuses across Irvine.
Our measurements were cross-referenced with city-wide Air Quality Index data from IQAir. This was done to minimize confounding variables such as daily and hourly fluctuations of PM2.5 levels in Irvine. Our initial goal for this research project was to determine how much of an impact the impact of OCTA buses on local PM2.5 levels.
This is an ongoing research project and we plan to continue gathering data from other cities in California. Our long-term goal is to present evidence-based solutions to help minimize bus-related pollution before OCTA transitions to a fully electric fleet by 2040.
